Horizontal Directional Drilling Contractor in Wisconsin
Wisconsin pairs a busy pipeline corridor with glacial ground, the Driftless Area, and two Great Lakes, just across the river from our Minnesota base. NCDD brings maxi rig HDD and large diameter experience to crossings statewide.
Wisconsin sits on a major energy and utility corridor. Interstate gas pipelines and crude lines run the length of the state, the Fox Valley, Madison, and Milwaukee keep utilities, water, and fiber growing, and crossings under the Mississippi, the Wisconsin River, and countless lakes have to go underground without disturbing the surface. That is directional drilling work, and directional drilling is all NCDD has ever done.
The ground changes fast here. Most of Wisconsin is glacial till, but the Driftless Area in the southwest was never glaciated, leaving deep bedrock valleys of sandstone and dolomite, and the eastern side runs into the hard Niagara dolomite escarpment. Add wetlands, frost, and Great Lakes shoreline, and Wisconsin rewards careful bore planning. As a Minnesota company right across the river, we know this ground.
What Makes Drilling in Wisconsin Different
Wisconsin mixes glacial till, Driftless bedrock, and heavy water in one state. Here's what we account for on a Wisconsin bore.
Energy & Utility Corridor
Interstate gas and crude pipelines cross Wisconsin, and the Madison, Milwaukee, and Fox Valley metros keep water, sewer, and fiber crossings steady. For the big-inch end of that market we bring maxi rigs and 56-inch capability.
Glacial Till & Driftless Bedrock
Most of the state is glacial till, but the unglaciated Driftless Area exposes sandstone and dolomite bedrock in deep valleys, and eastern Wisconsin runs into hard Niagara dolomite. We plan tooling and fluid programs for soft till and hard rock, sometimes on the same job.
The Mississippi, Lakes & Wetlands
The Mississippi along the western border, the Wisconsin, Fox, and Wolf rivers, Lakes Michigan and Superior, and thousands of inland lakes and wetlands mean water is everywhere. HDD installs the pipe underneath, which is why so many Wisconsin crossings go to directional drilling.
Frost, Wetlands & WDNR Permitting
Wisconsin frost and protected wetlands shape every crossing. We plan around cold-weather conditions, the kind a Minnesota crew handles every winter, and design bore paths and depths to clear Wisconsin DNR and federal USACE Section 404 requirements.
Directional Drilling in the Fox Valley and Along the Lakeshore
Appleton, Neenah, Sheboygan and the towns around them account for more of Wisconsin's utility crossing work than anywhere else we drill in the state.
The Fox Valley runs dense. Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, Kimberly, Little Chute and Kaukauna sit shoulder to shoulder along the Fox River, and the ground under those streets has been carrying gas, water, sewer and power since the paper mills were the biggest thing on the water. New line goes in beside old line, under streets that cannot close, and under the river itself at a dozen points between Lake Winnebago and Green Bay. Trenchless drilling is how that work gets done without tearing up a downtown people still have to drive through.
Sheboygan and the lakeshore add water to the equation. The Sheboygan River, the harbor and the Lake Michigan shoreline are all protected ground, and the lines that serve the city have to pass beneath them with the surface left intact. Manitowoc and the smaller lakeshore communities work the same way. These are short, shallow, tightly constrained crossings rather than big open runs, and they are as much about staging a rig on a narrow street as about the bore itself.

Wisconsin HDD: Common Questions
Does NCDD do horizontal directional drilling in Wisconsin? +
Yes, easily. Wisconsin sits right across the river from our Minnesota offices. We cover the whole state, one of 28 we work in, and horizontal directional drilling is the entire business.
Can NCDD drill Wisconsin's Driftless bedrock and dolomite? +
Yes. We plan tooling and fluid programs for glacial till, Driftless sandstone and dolomite valleys, and the hard Niagara dolomite of eastern Wisconsin.
Does NCDD cross the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers? +
Yes. We drill crossings under the Mississippi, Wisconsin, Fox, and Wolf rivers and Wisconsin's lakes and wetlands, up to 56-inch large diameter pipeline using our maxi rig fleet.
What markets does NCDD serve in Wisconsin? +
Interstate gas and crude pipelines, plus metro water, sewer, and fiber crossings, from small utility bores to large diameter transmission pipe.
Does NCDD drill in the Fox Valley? +
Yes. Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, Kimberly, Little Chute and Kaukauna are all inside our normal working area, and the Fox River crossings between Lake Winnebago and Green Bay are exactly the kind of work our rigs are built for.
Does NCDD work in Sheboygan and along the Lake Michigan shore? +
Yes. Sheboygan, Manitowoc and the lakeshore communities are part of our Wisconsin coverage. Crossings under the Sheboygan River, the harbor approaches and shoreline utilities are standard trenchless work, and we plan them around tight staging and protected water.
Got a Wisconsin crossing, a gas or crude line, a utility or fiber tie-in, a river or lake where open-cut isn't an option? We're just across the river. One call brings maxi rigs, large diameter experience, and crews who know glacial and Driftless ground alike.
