Horizontal Directional Drilling Contractor in Washington
Washington means glacial till, hard basalt, and salmon rivers where in-water work is tightly controlled. NCDD puts maxi rigs and large diameter experience to work on both sides of the Cascades.
Washington keeps building. The Puget Sound metros from Seattle to Tacoma and Everett need water, sewer, fiber, and power under rivers, highways, and dense urban corridors, the Williams Northwest gas pipeline runs through the state, and refineries up at Anacortes and Cherry Point keep product moving. Much of that has to go under salmon habitat where open trenching isn't an option, so the pipe goes in by directional drill. NCDD has no other line of business.
The ground fights you on both sides of the Cascades. In the Puget lowland you drill dense glacial till and Vashon deposits loaded with cobbles and boulders, on liquefiable soils in seismically active ground. East of the mountains it turns to the hard fractured basalt of the Columbia River Basalt Group. We tool and plan for cobbles, boulders, and rock, and we design crossings to protect the fish-bearing water Washington guards closely.
What Makes Drilling in Washington Different
Washington combines glacial cobbles, hard basalt, and some of the strictest in-water rules in the country. Four things drive how we plan a bore here.
Gas, Utility & Refinery Market
The Williams Northwest Pipeline, fast-growing Puget Sound utilities, refineries at Anacortes and Cherry Point, and a wave of central Washington data centers drive steady demand for crossings. Work at that scale is why we run a maxi rig fleet and carry 56-inch capability.
Glacial Till, Cobbles & Basalt
The Puget lowland is overconsolidated glacial till and Vashon deposits full of cobbles and boulders, and eastern Washington is hard, fractured Columbia River basalt. Both are tough on tooling and bore stability, and liquefiable soils in earthquake country add risk. We plan reaming, tooling, and fluid programs for ground this coarse and this hard.
Salmon Rivers & Puget Sound
The Columbia, Snake, Skagit, and Snohomish rivers, countless salmon and steelhead streams, and Puget Sound itself are everywhere in this state, and most carry strict habitat protections. HDD installs the pipe underneath without disturbing the water, which is exactly why so much Washington crossing work goes to directional drilling.
Ecology, WDFW & USACE Permitting
In-water work in Washington means a WDFW Hydraulic Project Approval, Department of Ecology oversight, federal USACE Section 404 review, and tribal treaty rights. We design bore paths and depths to clear them, and we plan crews and fluid around wet maritime winters and steep terrain.

Washington HDD: Common Questions
Does NCDD do horizontal directional drilling in Washington? +
Yes. We bring rigs and crews to Washington, Puget Sound to the Columbia Basin. NCDD works in 29 states, we're based in Minnesota, and HDD is the only line on our rate sheet.
Can NCDD drill Washington's glacial till and basalt? +
Yes. We plan tooling and reaming for cobbly, boulder-rich glacial till in the Puget lowland and for hard Columbia River basalt east of the Cascades, on ground that's seismically active and sometimes liquefiable.
How does NCDD protect salmon habitat on Washington crossings? +
HDD installs pipe well beneath rivers and streams without in-water disturbance, which is often the preferred approach for salmon and steelhead waters. We design crossings to meet WDFW Hydraulic Project Approval and Ecology requirements.
What pipe sizes and markets does NCDD serve in Washington? +
Natural gas, water and sewer, fiber, and refinery crossings, from small utility bores up to 56-inch large diameter pipeline using our maxi rig fleet.
