Large Diameter Directional Drilling Contractors

Maxi rig HDD specialists with the equipment, crews, and track record to handle the most demanding large diameter pipeline installations in the industry.

What is Large Diameter HDD?

Large diameter horizontal directional drilling (HDD) refers to trenchless pipeline installations typically involving pipe diameters of 24 inches and above, up to 56 inches in NCDD's case. These projects require specialized maxi rig equipment capable of generating the pullback force and torque needed to install heavy, large-diameter pipe through extended underground bore paths.

Large diameter HDD is the preferred method for major pipeline transmission projects, deep river and waterway crossings, and infrastructure installations where open-cut trenching is impractical, prohibited, or too disruptive. It's how critical pipelines get installed under rivers, highways, and environmentally sensitive areas without disturbing the surface.

Not every HDD contractor has the equipment or experience for large diameter work. It requires purpose-built maxi rigs, experienced guidance engineers, and crews who have done it before, at scale. NCDD checks every box.

When You Need a Large Diameter HDD Contractor

Large diameter directional drilling is required when the scope, environment, or pipe size exceeds standard HDD capabilities.

Pipeline Transmission Projects

Major natural gas, oil, water, and sewer transmission lines requiring 24-inch to 56-inch pipe diameters. These projects demand maxi rig equipment with high pullback capacity and experienced operators.

River & Waterway Crossings

Installing large diameter pipeline under rivers, sounds, bays, and other bodies of water where surface disruption is not permitted. NCDD has completed crossings including the Roanoke Sound and multi-thousand-foot intersect bores.

Environmental & Wetland Crossings

Trenchless installation through environmentally sensitive areas, archaeological sites, and protected wetlands where open-cut trenching is prohibited by regulation or permit conditions.

Highway & Infrastructure Crossings

Large diameter installations under highways, interstates, railroads, and existing infrastructure where surface disruption would impact traffic, commerce, or public safety.

Long-Distance Intersect Bores

Extended-length crossings where two rigs drill toward each other and intersect underground, a technically demanding operation that requires precision guidance and experienced crews. NCDD has completed 10,000+ foot intersect crossings.

Challenging Geology

Large diameter installations through hard rock, cobble, clay, and mixed-face geological conditions that require specialized tooling, mud systems, and operational expertise most contractors can't provide.

Why Choose NCDD for Large Diameter HDD?

When the pipe is big, the crossing is long, and failure isn't an option, you call NCDD.

Maxi Rig Fleet

Purpose-built large diameter drilling equipment with the pullback force, torque, and mud systems required for the largest pipeline installations, up to 56-inch.

80+ Years Combined Leadership Experience

Our management team has been doing this since before most contractors were founded. Over 50 miles of 42-inch pipeline installed, and counting.

100% Completion Rate

Every crossing under contract completed. We have never walked away from a difficult bore, no matter the geology, the distance, or the complexity.

In-House Guidance Engineering

Experienced guidance engineers who have worked both sides of the operation, superintendent and downhole navigation, for precise, on-target drilling.

All Geological Conditions

Hard rock, cobbles, clay, sand, mixed-face. Our tooling and mud systems are built for the conditions other contractors turn down.

Nationwide Mobilization

Crews and equipment that mobilize across 29 states. Wherever the project is, we get there and get it done.
