Horizontal Directional Drilling Contractor in Louisiana
Louisiana is pipeline and LNG country, built on some of the softest, wettest ground in America. NCDD brings maxi rig HDD and large diameter experience to crossings across the state.
Louisiana runs on pipe. The Haynesville Shale in the northwest, the LNG export terminals along the Gulf Coast, the petrochemical corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and Henry Hub itself sitting down in Erath: this is one of the densest midstream markets in the country, and almost none of it can be trenched. That's horizontal directional drilling, and it's all NCDD does.
What makes Louisiana hard isn't rock, it's water and the ground it leaves behind. Saturated soils, organic marsh, high water tables, and miles of bayou, swamp, and coastal wetland mean a bore has to hold its path through ground that wants to flow. Add the Mississippi, the Atchafalaya Basin, hurricane season, and some of the strictest coastal permitting in the country, and Louisiana becomes a place where HDD experience shows up fast.
What Makes Drilling in Louisiana Different
Louisiana's soft, saturated ground and dense pipeline market create conditions that punish inexperienced crews. Here's what we plan for on every crossing.
A Midstream & LNG Powerhouse
The Haynesville Shale, the Gulf Coast LNG corridor (Sabine Pass, Calcasieu, Cameron), and the Baton Rouge to New Orleans chemical region drive constant demand for gathering, transmission, and feed-gas crossings. This is where large diameter HDD earns its keep, and where our maxi rig fleet and 56-inch capability fit right in.
Soft, Saturated & Organic Soils
Most of south Louisiana is soft clay, silt, peat, and organic marsh sitting on a high water table. Soft ground raises the risk of inadvertent returns (frac-outs) and makes hole stability the whole game. We plan fluid programs, pullback, and buoyancy control specifically for ground that won't hold itself.
Bayous, the Mississippi & Coastal Wetlands
Louisiana is laced with bayous, the Mississippi and Red and Calcasieu rivers, the Atchafalaya Basin, and millions of acres of coastal marsh. Crossing them by open trench is often impractical or simply not permitted. HDD installs the pipe underneath, which is why so much Louisiana crossing work goes to directional drilling.
Coastal Permitting, Heat & Hurricanes
Crossings here mean USACE Section 404/10 review, Louisiana Coastal Use Permits through the state Office of Coastal Management, and LDEQ oversight, some of the strictest wetland rules in the country. We design bore paths and depths to clear them, and we plan crews, fluid, and schedule around extreme heat, humidity, and hurricane season.

Louisiana HDD: Common Questions
Does NCDD do horizontal directional drilling in Louisiana? +
Yes. We mobilize across Louisiana, the Haynesville Shale, the Gulf Coast LNG corridor, and the Baton Rouge to New Orleans region, from our Minnesota base, and we work across 29 states. HDD is 100% of our business.
Can NCDD drill Louisiana's soft, saturated ground? +
Yes. Soft clays, organic marsh, and high water tables raise frac-out risk and make hole stability critical. We plan drilling-fluid programs, buoyancy control, and bore paths specifically for the soft, wet ground that defines south Louisiana.
What Louisiana pipeline and LNG markets does NCDD serve? +
Haynesville gathering and transmission, Gulf Coast LNG feed-gas crossings, and the Mississippi River petrochemical corridor, plus utility and conduit work, up to 56-inch large diameter pipeline using our maxi rig fleet.
Do you do bayou, river, and coastal wetland crossings in Louisiana? +
Yes. We drill crossings under the Mississippi, Red, and Calcasieu rivers, the Atchafalaya Basin, and Louisiana's bayous and coastal marsh, designed to clear USACE and Louisiana coastal permitting.
Got a Louisiana crossing, a Haynesville gathering line, an LNG feed-gas pipe, a bayou or river where open-cut isn't an option? We'd like to look at it. We bring the maxi rigs, the large diameter experience, and crews who know how to drill soft, wet Louisiana ground.
