Horizontal Directional Drilling Contractor in Illinois
Illinois is a national pipeline crossroads laced with big rivers and dense Chicago infrastructure. NCDD takes those crossings on with maxi rigs and heavyweight large diameter experience.
Illinois is one of the busiest pipeline crossroads in the country. The Patoka hub, a cluster of refineries, the Chicago metro's utilities and fiber, and thousands of miles of gas and product line all have to cross the Mississippi, the Illinois River, interstates, and rail without disturbing the surface. Those crossings call for horizontal directional drilling. That is NCDD's entire trade.
The ground here is mostly workable but not simple. Glacial till and rich prairie soils sit over dolomite and limestone bedrock, with cobbles, shale, and the occasional hard Niagaran dolomite to plan around. Add wide river floodplains, extensive wetlands, and agricultural drainage everywhere, and Illinois rewards careful bore planning. Our tooling and fluid plans cover the whole spread.
What Makes Drilling in Illinois Different
Illinois combines a dense pipeline network, big rivers, and mixed glacial ground. Here's what goes into our bore plans.
A National Pipeline Crossroads
The Patoka tank hub, multiple refineries, and a dense web of gas and product pipelines make Illinois a constant source of crossing work, alongside Chicago-area utility and fiber demand. Big-inch crossings like these are exactly what our maxi rig fleet and 56-inch capability were built for.
Glacial Till & Dolomite Bedrock
Most of Illinois is glacial till and prairie soil over dolomite and limestone, including hard Niagaran dolomite near Chicago, with cobbles and shale in the mix. We plan tooling, reaming, and fluid programs for ground that runs from soft clay to hard rock, sometimes in one bore.
The Mississippi, Illinois & Floodplains
The Mississippi, Illinois, and Kaskaskia rivers, the Ohio along the southern border, plus Lake Michigan and wide floodplain wetlands, give Illinois no shortage of water. A directional drill puts the pipe far below the riverbed and leaves the surface alone, which is how most of these crossings get done.
IEPA, IDNR & USACE Permitting
Crossings here mean Illinois EPA and IDNR oversight, federal USACE Section 404 review, and coordination with agricultural drainage districts. We design bore paths and depths to clear them, and we plan around frost and the floodplain conditions along the major rivers.

Illinois HDD: Common Questions
Does NCDD do horizontal directional drilling in Illinois? +
Yes. Illinois crossings, from the Chicago metro to the Patoka hub and Metro East, are a straightforward mobilization for us. We're Minnesota-based, we work 29 states, and we drill for a living. Nothing else.
Can NCDD drill Illinois bedrock and glacial ground? +
Yes. We plan tooling and fluid programs for glacial till and prairie soils over dolomite and limestone, including hard Niagaran dolomite near Chicago, with cobbles and shale in the mix.
Does NCDD cross the Mississippi and Illinois rivers? +
Yes. We drill crossings under the Mississippi, Illinois, and Kaskaskia rivers and their floodplains, up to 56-inch large diameter pipeline using our maxi rig fleet.
What markets does NCDD serve in Illinois? +
Midstream gas and product pipelines, refinery tie-ins, and Chicago-area water, sewer, and fiber crossings, from small utility bores to large diameter transmission pipe.
Got an Illinois crossing, a Patoka-area pipeline, a Chicago utility line, a river or interstate where open-cut isn't an option? Put it in front of us. We'll bring the maxi rigs and the large diameter experience, and we'll tell you straight whether it drills.
